Transmission Repair in Hopkins

Your transmission is one of the major lifelines of your car. It’s responsible for transferring power from your engine to the drive wheels, and it also helps your engine run optimally at a range of speeds. We can help keep your transmission in tip top shape, but before we do, let’s take a deeper look into the inner workings of your transmission.

Automatic Versus Manual Transmission

When people ask if you drive an automatic or a manual/stick they’re actually talking about what type of transmission you have. Nowadays it seems like more people opt for the automatic transmission, but many drivers still like to do the gear shifting on their own. Let’s take a look at the two systems:

Automatic – An automatic transmission, as the name suggests, automatically shifts power from the engine to the drive wheels while shifting between gears. An automatic transmission is comprised of a few major components, including a planetary gear unit, a hydraulic pump and a torque converter.

Manual – A manual transmission is very similar to an automatic transmission, save for one key part. The manual transmission has a clutch pedal, which acts in place of a torque converter.

The torque converter and clutch help adjust the engine speed, and they rely on transmission fluid to lubricate all their gears and components.
